El Federal began as a neighbourhood provisions shop serving drinks, and its two rooms still carry the texture of old San Telmo. Look beyond the wooden bar for vintage advertisements, photographs, coloured soda siphons and portraits connected with the city’s tango culture.
It is a place to sit over food as well as coffee. The low counter in the first room makes the bar itself a possible dining spot, with the corner of Perú and Carlos Calvo just outside.
