Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
A museum for looking at how things are made and used, housed on the Upper East Side. A strong choice when you want design rather than another painting gallery.
Food & drink Upper East Side
Murals, a piano and an Upper East Side room that rewards staying put. The Carlyle’s bar makes an occasion out of one good stop.
Give the walls a moment before opening the menu. Ludwig Bemelmans’s murals surround this small room at The Carlyle, while the piano shapes the evening. It is an uptown destination in its own right, particularly when the plan is conversation and music.
Most seating is walk-in. Music cover charges begin from 17:30 and vary by seating and programme; drinks are additional. Consult the current line-up, charges and dress policy before setting out. A hotel-room booking is not a bar reservation, and the regular music programme does not guarantee a particular artist on your night.
The photograph shows the bar in April 2023.
